Store-Bought Supplements Are Draining Your Wallet

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that, globally, more than two billion people suffer from micronutrient deficiencies. Malnutrition is often associated with insufficient carbohydrates, proteins, and fats – the macronutrients. Although consumed in small quantities, a lack of micronutrients – like vitamin A, the B vitamins, vitamin C, zinc, calcium, iodine, and iron – also has severe consequences on our health.

This deficiency has a particularly devastating impact on the most vulnerable, with WHO reporting 45% of global deaths of children under five are associated with undernutrition. The visible effects of micronutrient deficiency aren’t always visible, which is why this challenge is also called “hidden hunger,” and it’s not restricted to poor countries. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, “Although the most severe problems of Micronutrient malnutrition are found in developing countries, people in developed countries also suffer from various forms of these nutritional problems.”

While it’s easy to address a lack of carbs, fats, or protein, it’s more difficult to provide the right micronutrients in the right amounts. To fill this gap, consumers increasingly reach for products to supplement their diet, creating a massive “supplements” market valued at more than $140 billion in 2020.

The Challenge of Blind Nutrition

How effective can general “multivitamin” supplements be in addressing specific micronutrient deficiencies? Supplements approach the problem with a very wide brush – a one-size-fits-all solution that isn’t much of a solution. On the other end of the supplement spectrum is providing each possible nutrient. But, aside from a deficiency diagnosis from your doctor, how do you know what to focus on?

No one wants to swallow a half dozen pills every morning, and this approach means you could end up over-supplementing. That makes it potentially a waste of money, and can also be bad for your health. For example, the National Institutes of Health warns, “too much vitamin A can cause headaches and liver damage, reduce bone strength, and cause birth defects. Excess iron causes nausea and vomiting and may damage the liver and other organs.”

In other words, “blind nutrition” doesn’t work. Not knowing what you need, and how much, means this approach is not well suited to safely and affordably filling your micronutrient gaps.
